Social Connections and DNUG collaborate to give you 2 great conferences in June 2017

News dnug, ibm, soccnx by Maria Nordin

Conflict in Dates!? No Conflict between Teams! – June is the month to enjoy one of the two major User Group Events in 2017

There will be a conflict in dates between the conferences of Social Connections and DNUG on June 1st, 2017. This happened by accident. We regret this inevitable circumstances very much, both boards agreed to cooperate and stay in close touch.

We will be able to offer two world class user group conferences in close time. As part of the short overlap between the opening session of 11th Social Connections in Chicago and the closing session of the 44th DNUG conference (#dnug44) in Berlin, we plan to have a joint web session.

Best wishes to the participants of both events for a successful and exciting conference, regardless of your decision.

Boards of DNUG & SOCCNX and good friends (!)

After a frantic couple of weeks, the searching, comparing, discussing and negotiating is over!

We have made the choice, signed the contract so it is official – It’s gonna be Summit West that will host Social Connections 11 in Chicago.

The event will take place June 1 & 2 in this amazing downtown location!

The venue we have chosen for our 11th event is for sure gonna rock. It is called Summit Chicago and is located in the heart of Chicago with plenty of hotels nearby. Those of you who joined us in Toronto will recognise the high quality, the professional staff and the fantastic location!

Want to find out more about the location – please follow this link http://www.summitchicago.com/

We are extremely excited that we can finally kick off things and start finding speakers, sponsors, event venues for our evening events.

In the meanwhile we have opened call for abstracts and registrations.

For our sponsors, the ones that make this event happen, see the sponsor page for our packages

Join us for 2 days of learning, networking and fun. We will be running tracks spread over 3 separate rooms on a variation of topics. Of course we will talk about IBM Connections, both cloud and on premise and we will provide you with the latest news on 6.0 and Connections Pink. Apart from that, we have decided to add some more content next to IBM Connections. We will be having a limited number of sessions on Watson Workspace and Analytics.

We have created a special IBM Connect rate for the first 20 people who register before the end of IBM Connect. This rate will automatically expire after IBM Connect, so make sure you register fast. $99 for this conference is not even a bargain, it’s nearly a free giveaway!!

We hope to see you all in Chicago for a great event.

Join the Social Connections team at IBM Connect 2017!

News connections, ibm, ibmchampions, ibmconnect, ics, register, San Francisco, sessions, socialconnections by Simon Vaughan

While we are working hard on planning Social Connections 11 in Chicago we want to do a shout out to another great conference: IBM Connect in San Francisco!

The Social Connections team have four speakers at IBM Connect delivering 5 sessions, details below, so we’re pretty excited!

IBM Connect 2017 promises to be an interesting event. Firstly, it is in a new city and conference venue, the Moscone Centre, San Francisco, which guarantees something new and refreshing. Secondly, with new Watson based cognitive functionality within the IBM Collaborative solutions, there’s exciting new content for IT professionals, developers and business leaders giving a great opportunity to teach, learn and share how they will deliver a new way to work using IBM Watson and the other collaboration solutions from IBM.

We look forward to networking with all our friends and also learning from thought leaders, researchers, gurus, Business Partners and experts who are driving results and transforming organisations, both large and small, around the world.

With over 200 sessions being delivered over 3 days it’s going to be difficult to choose which season to attend when we’re not delivering our own. Nothing beats hearing real-world insights from industry-leading companies, learning about the technologies, APIs, platforms and services that boost your existing solutions, extend productivity and deliver new business results.

IBM promises these goodies:

  • Expand your horizons—explore the promise of emerging technologies like augmented reality, Internet of Things, Blockchain, AI and Watson.
  • Reimagine everyday work—learn how the solutions that are redefining work—Watson, Verse, Connections, Notes, Domino, Bluemix, Box and more—fuel productivity and collaboration.
  • Meet the experts—hear from experts on solutions that focus employees on work that matters by connecting the right people, information and processes.
  • Experience solutions first-hand—see the latest workplace technologies and research projects in the EXPO. Work with the products in labs. Discover new approaches to integrate and extend IBM solutions.

As discussed, we’re proud to have Social Connections team members contributing to IBM Connect. We look forward to welcoming you at one of  to our sessions!

Revitalizing conversations in teams with IBM Watson Workspace (formerly known as Project Toscana)

News ibm, toscana, watson, watson workspace, watsonworkspace, workspace by Maria Nordin

Taste the word: Toscana. It promises a lot, at least if you have a little bit of a crush on Italy as I have. Food and wine in the sunset, overlooking a fabulous view of the countryside or the sea. There’s something ancient but invigorating in the name, no wonder I had high hopes on this team collaboration solution from IBM when I first heard about it!

Yes, the comparison is silly, but hey, don’t blame me! I didn’t name it 😉

Yesterday IBM launched Project Toscana with its new and equally invigorating name IBM Watson Workspace, at The World of Watson conference in Las Vegas.

You can see a replay of the launch here.

I have been in the privileged group beta testing this collaboration software for a couple of months before the launch. We didn’t just test it, we stress tested it.

My team (the team planning the Social Connections user group conferences) is an 9 member group located all over the world, in different locations and time zones. We know how difficult it is to bring a diverse team together working towards a common goal; to have a huge amount of topics to handle and what it’s like to have hundreds of messages to process in just a short time. How hard it can be to find relevant information and to create and manage workflows and tasks out of our discussions leading to decision making and follow ups in other systems.

Until this spring we used Slack but when we got the opportunity to join the beta program for Toscana the choice was easy, especially since we saw it as a chance to take part in the beta forums and give feedback to IBM and try and help make the product as great as possible!

We took the plunge and moved. Now, a couple of months in, I talk to my team of 9 but also in cross organization spaces, where members are from different companies and parts of the world. Small teams and large, some very active and some not. Now that we’ve been using IBM Watson Workspace for several months, I like it more and more each day. It’s the place to be, simple as that.

I see possibilities to bring teams together in many different ways. For shorter or longer projects, for interest groups, for departments at companies or even the local book club. IBM Watson Workspace is an agile environment where you can invite whoever you want and immediately start having a conversation and share your work. You can pick up the conversation on your mobile, when you are out and about, and seamlessly go back to your PC when you’re back at the office and, of course, you can integrate it with other systems.

What about the magic then? The first proof of Watson’s presence is what IBM calls “Moments”. Here we have a cognitive function which presents a managed list that helps you quickly scan the conversation for questions, tasks and topics of interests. Early days, but ever so promising! I can’t wait for more of this stuff! Take a look below:

Yesterday IBM announced a collaboration together with Slack, bringing the two products together in sweet harmony. This is how that looks:

So jump on the train to the cognitive era together with us, IBM and Watson!

Social Connections 11 postponed to Spring 2017

News cancel, connections, ibm, ibmconnections, soccnx, soccnx11 by Wannes Rams

It is with great sadness in our hearts that the Social Connections team has to announce that there will not be an event this fall.

We announced a November event in Southern Europe during the closing session of our Toronto event and the team has worked very hard since then to get this on the rails, but due to many factors we ran out of time.

It is very important to us to maintain the quality of our events and even improve each and every one of them. We now are at the point where we cannot guarantee that same quality and our high standard.  We are thinking of our sponsors, attendees and also ourselves, who depend on this.

Therefore we decided it is best to postpone and focus on our 2017 spring event and make this one the best one ever.

If you are interested in knowing why we ended up cancelling this event, feel free to reach out to any of the team members. We will happily give you an insight in our journey full of pitfalls that led to this decision.

The team is extremely sad and disappointed about this. Both for ourselves, but also for our sponsors, speakers and attendees who have been reaching out to us wondering when they should book their flights and hotel.

We have learned a lot on this journey, which will benefit us and eventually you, in the future.

We have something going on. We can’t tell you yet what it is. But since this one was like a balloon just swooshing out air,  next time  we will be better, stronger and cooler than ever.

Stay tuned!

Social Connections 10 was our biggest North American event, and our third largest ever!

News soccnx, toronto, wrapup by Jan Valdman

Social Connections 10 community

I am high in the sky over Atlantic heading back to Europe so I have had several hours to think about a recap of our last event in Toronto. Wow, it was a blast again!

After many weeks of hectic preparations, the two conference days ran as racing horses. Now there is a time to recover, take some breath and shout “Oh my, we did it again!”

First of all, we had a fabulous event with more then 200 attendees, 18 sponsors, 64 sessions, and 70 speakers.View from the venue

Thank you all so much for coming!

We had all the ingredients that make a good event – a great venue (perhaps the best ever) with a VIEW of the nice city of Toronto, awesome speakers, exciting agenda, some great announcements and especially you – the attendees. All together, it created an atmosphere – as some say – “that no other user group has”.

Let me highlight just few items:

  • There was exclusive content delivered by IBM product managers and execs such as Luis Benitez, Baan Slavens, Rob Ingram and Chris Crummey.
  • We had multiple great case studies from big, well-known customers such as Lowes, TD Bank and RBC
  • Well-known analysts Dion Hinchcliffe and Alan Lepofsky shared their insights
  • We saw Project Toscana code running live for the first time!
  • We have seen what’s new and coming in IBM Connections
  • We practiced Design Thinking once again
  • Our sponsors announced new products and enhancements (such as ConnectionsExpert from panagenda, our spotlight sponsor)
  • We had a new mobile app which received a very warm welcome
  • There was a masterclass on Connections adoption from Luis Suarez
  • There was a closing “Ask IBM” session moderated by Ed Brill
  • Over 100 people watched our live stream the first day
  • And last but not least we had great fun, including a gala event in the Hockey Hall of Fame (where all our attendees could touch the famous Stanley Cup!)

At the moment, we are collecting presentations from our speakers and will publish them on SlideShare over the next week or so. All “official” photos have been already uploaded to Flickr and we hope that some people find a new profile image there 🙂 If you have your own photos or videos that you want to share, then just let us know.

We announced that the next event will take place in Southern Europe late this year, with more details coming in August.

I hope that everybody enjoyed the event as much as the Social Connections team did! Thank you all again for coming, and special thanks to IBM Canada and to our sponsors, as without them we could not run these events.

Enjoy the summer and see you all at Social Connections 11!
